Why Should You Shop For A Network Marketing Sponsor?
By
One of the Keys to Success in Network Marketing
What many folks entering the world of Network Marketing don’t realize until it is too late is that who you are sponsored by makes almost as much of difference in your networking marketing success as which company you choose to build with.
There is a notion of thought out in the industry that you should be sponsored into the business by the first person who exposed you to the opportunity. Well I have news for you, in my personal opinion that is absolutely false.
If you are serious about developing a real business through the vehicle of network marketing than you have to diligently explore what are your available options.
Why should you shop for a Network Marketing Sponsor? Your sponsor is going to be your primary conduit initially to what could be a fantastic career within this industry or they could be the reason you never give this industry a fair chance at making a real difference in your life.
The right Network Marketing Sponsor is often times not the biggest recruiter for your opportunity. Alot of the times what you will find is that the highest recruiting executives within the company are so busy putting the next guy in that they lose sight of the 3 that just dropped out of the business because of lack of attention. This is why this type of business builder seems to always be running at a 100 mph just to keep their check at a decent level.
Another consideration to working with the top sponsor in your company is that these individuals are VERY experienced and because of this cannot give the individual attention that a new recruit might need.
You can think of the top guy as a General and their top leaders within the teams as Captains. A General doesn’t do much interaction with Privates (newbies) because it would be unproductive for the team as a whole so the Private should align themselves with a Captain in order to obtain the personal attention needed to develop within this industry.
As a Private you still get the benefit of being on the General’s team under the direction & mentorship of a strong Captain.
You want to make sure that your sponsor KNOWS HOW to sponsor and create business. Someone who is successful at what they’re doing right now but not so busy that they can’t give you a healthy dose of PERSONAL mentoring.
There are several areas to consider when you shop for a sponsor:
1. It’s crucial to connect with a Network Marketing Sponsor who absolutely has YOUR best interests at heart.
2. Are they coming from a recruiter’s mentality or do they understand that long term success revolves around training, developing, and mentoring (sponsoring) their new business partner?
3. Do they have a step by step system in place already to train you and the team you build? This one is of particular importance because remember although network marketing may be a business of relationships there is the MARKETING that has to take place in order to increase the opportunities to form those relationships.
4. Are they a hands on type of sponsor? Will they hop on the phone and coach you or are they too busy all of the time? Obviously your activity level will either incentivize them or demotivate them to do this with you.
5. What type of team culture do they have in place? Is it one of cooperation, self growth, mutual support and team driven goals or is it all about them?
6. Are they a 21st century network marketing sponser? Do they understand the role that Social Media, Article Marketing, and Forum Marketing have in your successful ability to attract others to you or are they spending their days & nights hanging out at Starbuck’s showing the plan?
7. Do they understand and appreciate the role that offline networking marketing has in the longevity and profitability of your business? Do they have an offline support system in place already?
8. Is this person someone I like, trust, and respect? You’re going to be in constant communication with your sponsor so it is important to make sure you mesh well with them.
9. Are they a student of Network Marketing and Personal Development? True success comes from the proper study and application of these principles.
10. Do they have a Community site that you can join and socialize with other team members?
I truly hope that I have given you something to think about when choosing who your Network Marketing Sponsor will be in your next endeavor. If you take the time and do your homework well it can make a massive difference in your life and those who come after you.
I look forward to hearing your comments and thank you in advance for retweeting this post and sharing it with your friends.
Helping You Achieve More,
John

great post jon about finding the right sponsor! i wish i’d read this months ago
!
i’m realizing that not everyone has the same understanding of the importance of social media and there are a lot of belly to belly folks out there in my upline.
a suggestion to folks is there is a lot of support out there from people in other companies who can mentor you, so feel your way around.
look forward to more, john.
thanks, sue vittner

Hey Sue!
You are the best and thanks for checking out the post. Make sure that you take a look at this post on the importance of a Gravatar to your Social Media Profile so you can put a pic next up to your comment. It really helps out in building your personal brand!

Great stuff John and extremely important, probably more so than any other consideration including the opportunity itself! I just dealt with this in a real world situation this week, twice, as a matter of fact. I also did some sponsor shopping myself two years ago when I found my mentor and joined his team. It was the best move I ever made as far as getting exactly what I needed to find success in my company!

You hit it right in the center John! Shopping for a sponsor is at least as important if not more so than the company itself. When I finally found a truly gifted coach, my business started taking off. It’s the same offline and online. Support makes all the difference.

Hey John! Great post. On one of my sites I have something referring to the fact that choosing a sponsor is as important as choosing a spouse. You need that much of a connection.
All of your points are good, valid points. Thanks for all the great information!

In theory, great post! I’ve run across individuals who are willing to help…irregardless of who the sponsor is in their organization. I’m sure that’s a rare trait in some companies, if you can “Give to Give” & not “Give to Get”, you might be surprised at what the result is!

Robert,
Thanks for stopping by partner! In response to your statement I believe as network marketing evolves more into online social networking I have come to find more and more industry leaders who are willing to help out those who are not in their own downline or even company for that matter.
Everything boils down to giving value. If your a leader that is what you do. Some of my closest friends and tribe members are leaders in their respective companies and we help each other out with strategy, masterminding, marketing techniques and more than likely we won’t ever work in the same company yet our tribe is still very tight.
The true basis of leadership is servanthood and once a person realizes this and acts upon it their circumstances and results change.

Hi John,
Here’s my formula, it differs only lightly from yours…
having a sponsor
+ the right company & leadership
+ the right compensation plan
+ the right technology & system
+ the right community
= keys to success.
When I first got started in this industry 15 years ago I had a top sponsor, he was a top income earner and he was there for me.
Unfortunately, that was a direct sales business and I had to inventory a lot of products. I worked my butt off for that company “Watkins” products. The products were great and community I enjoyed but it took me away from my family. Wrong system and no patented products.
Next, I joined MLM guru, Randy Gage.
The company was FreeNet. He was the marketing consultant and I thought I was going to be a millionaire.
For my first meeting, I had 20 people in my living room and Randy did the presentation and did not enroll 1 person that night. after 10 months my residual was only $500/month. It was the wrong product, no community…it was all about making money.
Since I knew he was a guru, I joined him in another company Envion, a nutritional company. After 10 months my income was about $800/month Wrong system, wrong product (no patents) and wrong community.
Then by accident, when helping Randy I was introduced to my current company. The formula worked. Within 18 months I had a residual over $12,000/month. I have been with them now for 12 years.
I have learned lots of lessons in this business and know for a fact that our formulas + passion + vision + focused action area also important.
At the end of the day we must all realize that our success or lack there of is ultimately up to us.
It certainly helps to have the formula for success that both you and I laid out in the beginning but at some point…sooner then later we must step up and take responsibility for our business.
As a network marketing professionals we are indeed the CEO of our own business…You Inc.
Thanks for your leadership John. You are a great example for us all.
You have a choice so, make it a better than terrific day!

Terry,
That was an excellent post my friend and it shows why your a leader. Your testimony is a tribute to the spirit of persistence! I especially like the emphasis on personal responsibility. While choosing the right mlm sponor/mentor to be sponsored by can be an incredibly essential part of the “Success Pie” the absolutely most important area is that of Personal Responsibility.
Personal responsibility is the juice that is going to get your butt in gear to create the systems which will produce the results you are seeking. It is the impetus that will motivate you to read the personal development material that will build your inner value thereby making you a more attractive business partner and mentor. It is the force that will drive you to go to complete your workout at 11:00 pm that night just because you have made the DECISION to get yourself back in shape.
When you combine the forces of attraction with the practical know how of online marketing and wrap them up with the values of personal responsibility and self discipline that is indeed the recipe for massive and all out success.

Everyone should read this post before they ever decide to commit to a company or sponsor. Very well written and kudos to you.
To be a true leader you must Decide, Commit and help those you sponsor do the same so you Succeed.

Well said John!
Man, I signed up a couple in my business today and I got a chance to read this soon after. It brought up a lot of thoughts.
The economic situation out there is such that there are some “desperation decisions” going on. People need money now and they are grasping at something-anything. This couple is lucky to have found us. At the same time, there is a struggle with them to second guess some of my coaching because of the financial investment. on your topic, “3. Do they have a step by step system in place…?” That is they key to making thins work. I am praying that they don’t short- change themselves and do like so many cheapskates have done and cut themselves out of their own prosperity.
Good stuff, John! Keep the good material coming!

Amazing post John and so true. Having a connection with your sponsor will make a huge difference in your success. Ultimately is up to you to make it in the company but if your sponsor is a good leader then it does make the difference.
I have seen friendships suffer through sponsorships so sometimes that may not be the best choice.
Thanks for this great article John.

I have been involved in many different MLM companies throughout my years in the industry and I wish that I had know these types of things when I started. It took me years to learn this kind if info about what to look for in a sponsor.
When you have a great sponsor, someong that has these qualities that you are talking about John, it makes such a difference. Your business moves so much quicker and your own confidence increases that much quicker.
Thanks for puttingthis out there.

John,
What great information! I found a great company but failed to really connect with my sponsor. “Help” was to buy products recommended. I was told what to do but was expected to do it alone or spend money to find out more. It is a blessing to know that I can find knowledge like this to continue onto success! Thank You!

Ooooh. Good topic.
I addressed this a few months back in a post
that I did. I think many people are hung up
on joining with a “Guru” or “Name Brand” leader
that they lose sight of the fact this person could
be too busy to ever help them. Better to find that
perfect “Connection” so you can have a long lasting,
fulfilling business relationship.

Hey John, Great post! When first coming into this industry I had no one to help me. I literally had to pay someone to get some mentoring. I paid $1,800 for a few sessions with Jonathan Budd. It was worth well worth it! So from that point on I vowed that my MLM team wouldn’t have to pay for support like I had to. I think we should all give our all to help our team and that is how I have been ever since…
Make it a great day!

Hello,
So wish I had know this a long time ago. Have jumped around to so many companies with people saying they will help. Some have tried like invite invite and invite some more to meetings. Just not my style. Still jumping. Just met John this week because I liked how he was responding to people on a forum. Thanks for sharing all of your input.
